TOUR SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2002 WITH RACHEL
STAMP
Girls On Top had a great time squashed together in a hire van with all our equipment, stage clothes, G.O.T. t-shirts & beers travelling from town to town all over England, driven by our tour manager Graham. We had to sit on deckchairs in the back cos we couldn't afford one with more seats & kept sliding about at every corner! The only down side is when we couldn’t stay in b&b, we drove back to London & had to unload all our gear 3 floors up at about 4 in the morning- quite shagged by then! The 1st stop was Norwich & we weren’t too pleased when Rachel Stamp turned up 3 hours late & we were left with 2 minutes sound check, so it didn’t get off to a very friendly start. Then Vicki managed to get her tights snagged into the hoover performing ‘Electroluxury’(about a neglected housewife) & the microphone lead followed- she was disappearing into the thing bit by bit. Northampton was better in a purple venue called ‘the Soundhaus’ with a lips sofa & we chatted more with David the singer & Robin the drummer, also Annie their merchandise girl & Mikey their tour manager were big pals by the end of the tour. Another memorable occasion was at Nottingham's 'Rock City' when Girls on Top jammed a suberb version of Gary Glitter’s ‘Rock‘n’roll’ at soundcheck with Robin creating the double drum sound, while Vicki & David looked on approvingly. The most packed venue was at Tunbridge Wells, rammed to the rafters with very young fans of Rachel Stamp & boy, was it sweaty- good though thank god we weren’t wearing pvc that night! Here is Amanda, Liddy & Graham doing an impression of Shahina, the R.S. keyboardist in town! In Sheffield, Leicester & Wolverhampton we met more superbly dressed fans- lots of pink hair extensions, Cardiff was the first time we’ve played a matiné- no booze allowed as the crowd were under age & we ended up signing boy’s chests & girl’s bras, a very eager bunch! On the way back we passed through the peak district and had some time to relax- there’s a pic of us on our way up the Devil’s Arse (a mountain silly!) ‘The Joiners’ was another great evening in Southampton & we met the Lillettes, a girl guitar band, who we have since played with at Punk Aid. (more of that event to come soon). The last 2 dates, Harlow, then the LA2, London, Liddy was unavoidably absent, (much to her annoyance) so our friend Bambi stood in on drums. This was slightly nerve-racking as it sounded quite different (she looked different too as she’s black with dreadlocks!) We all sped off after the gig in Harlow (in cars this time) leaving the boot flapping open & not realising Vicki’s bag (containing whips, stockings, suspenders, chains, ravaged Barbie doll & pvc fetish outfit) had tumbled somewhere onto the road. Thinking to contact Harlow Police, Vicki had to explain the contents to some very bemused officers who had located it – what was the egg for they asked, (thinking outrageous sex act)- yes dear friends, it was only a shaker. And after all that time together, we still didn’t find out what Rachel Stamp meant! |
